Materials Needed for a Granny Stitch Bookmark
Creating a crochet granny stitch bookmark with a button closure is a delightful and relatively simple project that requires only a few basic materials.
The first thing you’ll need is yarn. For this project, a lightweight, category 3 DK weight yarn is used, as it’s not too bulky yet provides a sturdy finish.
Additionally, you’ll need a crochet hook size that is stated in the pattern notes or a size that creates somewhat tight stitches with what yarn you choose to use.
A hook with a comfortable grip is always nice to use and can make crocheting more enjoyable. My favorite crochet hooks are from this Etsy Shop.
Next, you’ll need a button for the closure. The button not only adds a decorative element but also serves a functional purpose, keeping the bookmark securely in place.
Choose a button that complements your yarn color and is around .75-1 inch/2-2.5 cm in diameter.

This granny stitch bookmark can be made in 3 different versions. 2 of the versions use hair elastic. Notes are within the pattern if you have a different size elastic than what the sample used.

Understanding the Granny Stitch Bookmark
The granny stitch is a fundamental crochet technique that is used in projects worked in the round and in rows. It is a go-to crochet stitch for many. It consists of clusters of double crochet stitches, typically grouped in sets of three, which create a slight lacy, open texture.
This crochet wrap around bookmark is worked widthwise. Working widthwise easily allows you to adjust the size as not all books are the same height.
This bookmark pattern is a wrap around style. This means that the bookmark wraps around the front or back cover of the book along with a group of pages to mark the specific page you are on.
2 versions of this bookmark involve a button closure and 1 version is a continuous loop that will be slipped onto the book.

Stitches/Abbreviations: US Terms
- ch – chain
- sts – stitches
- sp – space
- sk – skip
- sc – single crochet
- dc – double crochet
- sc2tog – single crochet 2 stitches together
- Special Stitch: beginning double crochet (beg dc) = do not ch to start (unless noted in pattern), sc in first st or stated sp, sc in left vertical bar of sc just made (aka – stacked single crochet)
Notes:
- This is worked width wise, 1 short end to the other.
- There are 3 versions that can be made:
- Version 1 (with button): No elastic is used – a chain loop is crocheted as the button loop
- Version 2 (with button): 1 elastic is used as the button loop
- Version 3 (no button): An elastic is joined at each end making this a continuous loop.

Instructions – Wrap Around Granny Stitch Bookmark:
VERSION 1
Row 1: Ch 16, join to first ch with a slip st.
Row 2: Ch 1, 2 sc in first, sc in next 2, turn. 4 sts
Row 3: Ch 1, 2 sc in first, sc in next 3, turn. 5 sts
Continue to BODY section.
VERSION 2
Row 1: Ch 4, sc in second ch from hook, sc across, turn. 3 sts
Rows 2-4: Ch 1, sc in first, sc in each st across, turn.
Place hair tie in center of piece, fold in half so Row 1 and Row 4 come together.
Row 5: Ch 1, work into Row 1 and 4 at the same time, sc in first, sc in each st across, turn.
Row 6: Ch 1, 2 sc in first, sc in next, 2 sc in last, turn. 5 sts – Continue to BODY section.
VERSION 3
Row 1: Ch 4, sc in second ch from hook, sc across, turn. 3 sts
Rows 2-4: Ch 1, sc in first, sc in each st across, turn.
Join 2 one-inch hair ties (see how to do this in the image below) before continuing to the next step.
To join 2 hair ties: overlap the 2 hair ties, start to pull the top hair tie (arrow 1) back through the center of the other hair tie while pulling the bottom hair tie (arrow 2) up through the center of the top hair tie
Place hair tie in center of piece, fold in half so Row 1 and Row 4 come together.
Row 5: Ch 1, work into Row 1 and 4 at the same time, sc in first, sc in each st across, turn.
Row 6: Ch 1, 2 sc in first, sc in next, 2 sc in last, turn. 5 sts – Continue to BODY section.
BODY – ALL VERSIONS
Row 1: Beg dc, sk 1, 3 dc in next, sk 1, dc in last, turn.
Row 2: Ch 1, beg dc in sp between first dc and next dc, 2 dc in same sp, sk 3, 3 dc in sp between last 2 dc, turn. 6 sts
Row 3: Beg dc, sk 2, 3 dc in sp between the two 3-dc groups, sk 2, dc in last, turn. 5 sts
Repeat Rows 2-3 until body section measures about 16-16.5”/40.5-42 cm. Adjust this length according to what size book you may be using and if you are using a longer elastic than what was used in this sample. Make sure to end on a Row 3 repeat.
VERSION 1 and 2
Last Row: Ch 1, sc2tog, sc in next, sc2tog. Fasten off a 10”/25 cm tail. Thread the tail into a yarn needle and sew the button onto the last Body row. Some thread and a sewing needle can also be used to sew the button on if your yarn needle does not fit through the buttonholes. Weave in remaining ends.
VERSION 3
Row 1: Ch 1, sc in each st across. 5 sts
Row 2: Ch 1, sc2tog, sc in next, sc2tog. 3 sts
Rows 3-4: Ch 1, sc in each st across. 3 sts
Fasten off a 10”/25 cm tail, (see note on image 3 if using a longer elastic) put the last 3 rows inside the center of the elastic and fold rows over, use the tail and yarn needle to seam closed to secure elastic. Weave in remaining ends.
How to use: this bookmark style will be wrapped around the front or back cover of the book along with pages of the book to mark your place.
