This pattern calls for a 4.5mm but you can check gauge. My favorite crochet hooks are from this Etsy Shop and I have been using clay handle hooks for 8+ years now.
Other essential tools include a pair of sharp scissors for cutting yarn and a yarn needle. Also, a way to steam block the final piece will give the wall hanging an even more polished look.
Lastly, don’t forget to have a sturdy dowel rod or branch to hang your creation. The dowel rod adds structure and support to your wall hanging, allowing it to be displayed beautifully.

VERSION 1
Row 1: Ch 23, sc in second ch from hook, sc in each ch across, turn. 22 sts
OR
Substitute 22 fsc sts for Row 1, turn. 22 sts
Row 2: Beg dc in first, dc in next, *ch 2, sk 2, dc in next 2; repeat from * across, turn. 12 dc, 10 ch’s
Row 3: Ch 1, sc in first, sc in next, *ch 2, sk 2, sc in next 2; repeat from * across, turn. 12 sc, 10 ch’s
Rows 4-27: Repeat Rows 2-3. Turn after Row 27.
Dowel Rod and Border: Ch 1, join the 7.5”/19 cm dowel rod to the top of last row – sc evenly across last row working over/around the dowel rod, rotate to work along long edge, sc evenly around the rest of the piece placing 3 sc in the corners, do not fasten off when you reach the dowel rod.
Hanging Loop: Sl st to the first st on the dowel rod, ch 48, sl st to the last st on the dowel rod.
Fasten off and weave in ends. Continue to Fringe Instructions.

Dowel Rod and Border: Ch 1, begin to sc evenly around the bottom and first side of piece, place 2 sc in the outer corners and a sl st in the inner corners of the tapered section (if the edges look wavy then you have too many sts), pause at the top where Row 1 is to join the dowel rod, ch 1, join the 9”/23 cm dowel rod to the top of the first row – sc evenly across the row working over/around the dowel rod, then ch 48 to form the Hanging Loop and sl st to the first st on the dowel rod. Sl st across the sc sts that are around the rod, ch 1, sc evenly along last side of the piece the same way as the first side, join with a sl st to the first st of the edge.
Fasten off and weave in ends. Continue to Fringe Instructions.
FRINGE TASSELS
Cut 7” long strands for the fringe tassels. The samples pictured used 4 strands per tassel. Fold the strands in half, use a crochet hook to pull the fold part way through the wall hanging where the tassel is being placed, push the loose ends through the loop and tighten.
FINISHING
Steam block piece if needed for a clean finish and to straighten the fringe tassels.
