Materials Needed for Crochet Kitchen Bowl Cozies
Before diving into the creation of your crochet bowl cozy, it’s essential to gather the right materials. The primary material required is yarn. For a bowl cozy, it is recommended to use cotton yarn due to its heat resistance and ease of washing.
Cotton yarn is durable and can withstand high temperatures without melting or warping, making it perfect for a cozy that will be used with hot dishes. Definitely use a 100% cotton yarn if you actually plan on putting the cozy in the microwave. I recommend having the bowl cozy nearby to transfer the bowl into after microwaving.
In addition to yarn, you will need a crochet hook size stated in the pattern or size needed to meet gauge. A measuring tape, yarn needle, scissors and stitch markers are also needed. My favorite hooks are from this shop.
Recommended Worsted Weight Cotton Yarns:
- We Crochet/Knit Picks Dishie – 100% Cotton/190 yards per skein
- Hobby Lobby I Love This Cotton – 100% Cotton/180 yards per skein
- Lion Brand 24/7 Cotton – 100% Mercerized Cotton/186 yards per skein

Crochet Stitches and Techniques Used in the Pattern
The crochet bowl cozy pattern utilizes a combination of basic stitches but also a couple techniques that may seem more advanced. The primary stitch used is the single crochet stitch, which is ideal for creating a solid fabric. The half double crochet, chain and slip stitch are also used in this pattern.
One technique used in part of this bowl cozy pattern is working in turned rounds. If you have never worked in turned rounds then it can take some practice to get use to. Learn more details about the feature here. Working in the back loop only of a stitch is also a technique used within the pattern.
Be sure to read all of the pattern notes carefully before starting and review the notes again when working the pattern if needed.

Body
- The body of the bowl cozy is worked in standard rounds with no turning.
- When working the ch-1 for the corners, try and make the ch 1 as loose as possible.
- The corner ch-1 spaces may be hard to see. You can use stitch markers to mark where they are so they are easier to find.
- The first stitch after working a corner may be slightly hidden, make sure it does not get skipped.
- When starting a Body round, you will have to reach back slightly with your hook to work the first sc st in the previous ch-1 sp made.
