Why choose a rectangle lace shawl?
To some this shawl may not be lacy enough but I consider it a lace shawl because it has a stitch pattern that creates holes that are large enough to see through.
A rectangle lace shawl offers a variety of benefits that make it a popular choice among crocheters. Firstly, the rectangular shape provides versatility in styling. You can drape it over your shoulders for a classic look, or wrap it around your neck as a scarf for added warmth and style. The open lacework of the shawl adds a touch of elegance and sophistication to any outfit, making it suitable for both formal occasions and casual outings.
In addition to its aesthetic appeal, a crochet lace shawl is a practical accessory. The stitches create a lighter weight fabric that is perfect for transitional seasons or chilly summer evenings. The openwork design allows air to circulate, keeping you comfortable. Whether you’re looking for an extra layer of warmth or a fashion-forward statement piece, a rectangle lace shawl is a perfect addition to your wardrobe.

Basic crochet stitches for creating this lace shawl
It’s important to have a solid foundation of basic crochet stitches for this pattern. Mastering these fundamental techniques will give you the confidence to tackle more complex patterns and create more stunning lace shawls and other crochet projects.
The chain stitch (ch) is the building block of crochet and is used to create the foundation of your project. It’s essential to maintain an even tension while chaining to ensure a neat and consistent fabric. The single crochet (sc) is another basic stitch that forms a dense and sturdy fabric. It’s often used in lace shawls to create solid sections or edging.
The double crochet (dc) is a versatile stitch that is commonly used in lace patterns. It creates a taller stitch, allowing for more openwork and intricate designs. These basic stitches listed above will serve as the building blocks for your lace shawl.
Construction of this rectangle lace shawl
The construction of this rectangle shawl is different than most you may see. To achieve it’s specific look it is worked in 3 sections. The official shape rather than being a standard rectangle is actually a trapazoid shape.
- Triangle Shape: first the center triangle shape is worked
- Side 1: side 1 is worked off of one edge of the triangle and worked on a bias where the top edge adds increases and the bottom edge has decreases
- Side 2: side 2 is worked off of the other edge of the triangle using the same technique as side 1
- Wet blocking: wet blocking ensures that your shawl has open stitches and nice drape

Styling and wearing your lace shawl
Once your rectangle lace shawl is complete, it’s time to explore the various ways to style and wear it. The versatility of a lace shawl allows for endless possibilities when it comes to incorporating it into your outfits.
For an elegant and classic look, drape the shawl over your shoulders, allowing the sides of the shawl to cascade down your arms. This styling is perfect for formal events or occasions where you want to make a statement. Pair it with a simple dress or blouse to let the shawl take center stage.
For a more casual and relaxed vibe, wrap the shawl around your neck as a scarf or even around your head and shoulders. This adds a touch of warmth and style to your everyday outfits. Experiment with different wrapping techniques to achieve different looks, such as a loose wrap or a cozy cowl.
A shawl pin is always a great item to have when it come to styling and wearing a shawl in different ways. The shawl pin I use most can be found here.
