Materials Needed for a Crochet Mug Cozy
To start your crochet mug cozy project, you’ll need to gather a few materials. The yarn used for this pattern is a medium-weight category 4 yarn. Cotton yarn is often recommended because it’s durable, easy to wash, and provides excellent insulation.
However, you can choose any worsted weight yarn that feels comfortable to you. 3 cotton yarns I used successfully are I Love This Cotton from Hobby Lobby, Lion Brand 24/7 Cotton and We Crochet Dishie. I’m sure you most likely already have a cotton or worsted weight yarn in your stash that you can use.
Next, you’ll need a crochet hook. A 4.0 mm (G-6) hook is used for this coffee mug cozy to keep the stitches nice and tight. Check the pattern gauge though and adjust hook size if needed.
You will also need a stitch marker and a yarn needle and scissors are also needed to bring the project to completion.

Crochet Stitches, Techniques and Customization
The crochet mug cozy pattern uses a handful of simple crochet stitches. The main stitches used are single crochet and chain stitches. You’ll also need to know how to do a slip stitch.
This mug cozy is made to fit a standard mug and nothing that is oversized. Adjusting the height is easy if needed by worked more row repeats.

Instructions – Weaver Mug Cozy:
Version 1 – Lengthwise
Ch 14, not too tightly and place a stitch marker on the 14th ch, then ch 45 more for a total of 59 chs. If you need to adjust the chain length for circumference then adjust in multiples of 3 after the initial 14 chains.
Row 1: Work in the back bumps of the ch sts, sc in 2nd ch from hook, *sc in next 2, ch 1 sk 1; repeat from * across to 1 st before marker, sc in next, turn leaving 14 chs unworked as this will become a handle loop. 30 sc, 14 ch-1 sps
Row 2: Ch 1, sc in first, *2 sc in ch sp (working the 2 sc in the back bump of the beginning ch will help avoid gaps), ch 1, sk 2; repeat from * across to last st, sc in last, turn. 30 sc, 14 ch sps
Row 3: Ch 1, sc in first, *2 sc in ch sp, ch 1, sk 2; repeat from * across to last st, sc in last, turn. 30 sc, 14 ch sps
Rows 4-13: Repeat Row 3.
Handle Loops: Bring the 14 unworked foundation chains up towards the hook and join with a sl st to the first ch. Turn, sl st across last row worked, ch 15, join with a sl st to the opposite corner at the foundation chain.
Fasten off and weave in ends.
Version 2 – Widthwise
Ch 30, join to first loop with a sl st.
Row 1: Ch 1, sc in same st as join, (sc in next 2, ch 1 sk 1) 4 times, sc in next, TURN, (stitches left unworked are the first handle loop). 10 sc, 4 ch-1 sps
Row 2: Ch 1, sc in first, *2 sc in ch sp (working the 2 sc in the starting ch loop below will help avoid gaps), ch 1, sk 2; repeat from * across to last st, sc in last, turn. 10 sc, 4 ch-1 sps
Row 3: Ch 1, sc in first, *2 sc in ch sp, ch 1, sk 2; repeat from * across to last st, sc in last, turn. 10 sc, 4 ch-1 sps
Rows 4-38: Repeat Row 3.
Border: Ch 1, turn, sl st in each st across, rotate to work along long edge, ch 1, sl st evenly along long edge, ch 1 at the corner, sl st evenly along first row edge (not the handle chain loops), ch 1 at the corner, sl st evenly along long edge, join with a sl st to first st of border.
Second handle loop: Ch 15, sl st in opposite corner of same short edge.
Fasten off and weave in ends.
