About the Double Crochet Stitch Cowl Pattern
This crochet cowl uses the double crochet stitch throughout along with chains. You will also find some single crochet stitches along the top and bottom edge to provide the finished look. The stitches may be simple but the repeats on the increase rounds should be read carefully.
This cowl is worked from the top down and it is worked in turned rounds. The top of the cowl is standard shape with a straight form. As the increase rounds start, the cowl will begin to taper out at the bottom. This provides a more unique look to the cowl than just the standard cowl that has no shaping. It’ll have a nice drape over some of the shoulder area.
SIZES: This cowl pattern was written for 3 sizes – Small, Medium and Large. The height will remain the same for each but more stitches to start the cowl will give it more of a drape and not as tight fitting around the neck. The shoulder part will also be slightly larger in the Medium and Large size. The size Small will keep the top of the cowl closer to the neck for a more snug fit. The modeled photos show the size Small.

Materials Used for the Double Crochet Stitch Cowl
In order to make this simple double crochet stitch cowl you will need to gather your materials. You will need a DK/Light Worsted weight yarn which is a category 3 yarn. 2 yarns I used are We Crochet Gloss Dk – 70% Merino Wool, 30% Silk and hand dyed yarn from Tippy Tree Yarns Super DK – 100% Superwash Merino Wool.
You will also need your size 5.0mm crochet hook or size needed to obtain gauge. A yarn needle and scissors are needed to finish off the cowl. This cowl can also optionally be wet blocked or steam blocked to open up the stitches some more and improve drape.

Instructions – Simplistic Cowl:
S (M, L)
Ch 84 (92, 100) or in a multiple of 4, join to first ch.
Alternatively, a foundation single crochet round can be substituted for the foundation chain and round 1.
Round 1: Ch 1, sc in each ch around, join, TURN. 84 (92, 100) sts
Round 2: Beg dc in first, dc in next, ch 2, sk 2, *dc in next 2, ch 2, sk 2; repeat from * around, join, turn. 42 (46, 50) dc, 21 (23, 25) ch-2 sps
Rounds 3-11: Beg dc in first ch-2 sp, dc in same sp, ch 2, sk 2, *2 dc in next ch-2 sp, ch 2, sk 2; repeat from * around, join, turn.
If you want more fabric/height to the cowl, work more repeats of Round 3 before continuing to the Increase Rounds.
