Do you like crocheting things for every holiday? Don’t forget about Valentine’s Day. This is a nice Valentine’s Day Cowl to crochet.

Crocheting items for Valentine’s Day is fun because I get to use colors I don’t typically use. Such as reds, pinks and some purples.

I also don’t crochet very many hearts or things with hearts in them.

When it comes to Valentine’s Day and crochet, I think I’d rather have something that I can wear rather than a decor item.

This crochet cowl is perfect because the weather in most areas of the USA is still cold when Valentine’s Day comes around.

This cowl is great to wear out and about the week of Valentine’s Day and the day of.

About The Cowl

This cowl uses 2 different colors. To keep it in theme with Valentine’s Day I used a red and pink tonal yarn paired with white.

The red and pink yarn is a fun hand dyed yarn from ThreadHead Knits Co. It is a boucle DK weight yarn.

The white yarn is actually a worsted weight yarn but on the thinner side of that weight category. It is We Crochet Mighty Stitch.

So, use a DK weight yarn for the entire cowl or use only a thin worsted weight or mix the 2 weights of yarn.

Stitches & Techniques

The difficulty level of this crochet cowl is Easy.

Here are some techniques and stitches you will need to know how to do:

+ Know how to crochet in the round.

+ Know how to work in the back loop only.

+ You will also need to know how to follow instructions for a special stitch.

+ Optional, how to work foundation single crochet stitches.

+ How to work single crochet, half double crochet and double crochet stitches

Another great thing about this fun cowl is that it does not need to be made in Valentine’s Day colors. It can be made in any color combination or even a solid color.

Instructions: Cupid’s Valentine Cowl

Row 1: With A and 4.5mm hook, fsc 84 or in a multiple of 4.

or

Ch 84, join to first ch, ch 1, sc in each ch around, join – 84 sts.

Row 2: Ch 3 (counts as a dc st throughout), sk 1, V-st in next, sk 1, *dc in next, sk 1, V-st in next, sk 1; repeat from * around, join to beginning ch 3 – 21 dc, 21 V-sts.

Row 3: With B, ch 1, hdc in same st as join, blo hdc in each st and ch sp around, join – 84 sts.

Rows 4-20: Repeat Rows 2-3 ending on a Row 2 repeat. If you wish to have a different height to your cowl then continue more repeats.

Row 21: With A, ch 1, sc in same st as join, blo sc in each st and ch sp around, join – 84 sts.

Fasten off and weave in ends.

Tie:

With a 3.75mm hook and A, create a chain length about 30-32 inches.

When making the tie, leave a length of yarn on each end of the tie to use to attach the poms or hearts.

Make the tie by working fsc sts to achieve the length.

Now, weave the strand in and out of the final V st round by skipping 2 or 3 stitches at a time when weaving.

Use a small pom pom maker and make 2 yarn poms with color B. Attach one to each end of the tie and weave in ends.

OR

Create 2 puffy hearts. Pattern used for the hearts is not mine and is from Repeat Crafter Me. View that pattern here or search  the terms ‘repeat crafter me puffy hearts’ for the pattern.

Make 2 puffy hearts. I worked fewer rows to make the hearts small enough and used a 3.25mm hook. I made 2 rows with 6 sts and then 3 rows with 3 sts rather than the 3 rows with 6 sts and 4 rows with 3 sts as the pattern states.

Use B to create each half of the heart and then use A to seam the heart halves together. Do not overstuff.

Attach one to each end of the tie. Weave in remaining ends.
