Have you ever been on the look out for a crochet new years project?
I think crochet projects specifically for the new year are sometimes hard to find. You’ll find personal projects you can make after the busy holidays are over but I’d also love something fun and quick for New Years.
This crochet coffee sleeve is a nice reusable item. It goes great with the new years resolution to use more earth friendly products or reuse items.
I hope you can look back on 2021 and find a couple fond memories of that year. It is always nice to spend a minute for some reflection.
So, this crochet new year project is the 5th year in a row I have done this.
Back in 2018 I decided to create a colorwork cup cozy with the new year displayed on it. I have had fun creating this as a tradition each year now.
This project is fun finding new yarns and colors each year to try. I really enjoyed the black and white theme with last years new year cup cozy pattern.

This year I decided to just look through my stash to find some fun yarn to use. This project can also be great for using up some scrap yarn that you have been saving throughout the year.
The black yarn is I Love This Yarn from Hobby Lobby (worsted weight). The multi color yarn is a hand dyed boucle yarn from Threadhead Knits Co. It is actually a DK weight yarn.
A worsted weight or a DK weight can work fine for the accent color of the numbers.
This crochet new year pattern will not include any row by row written instructions to follow.
You will need to know how to follow a graph working in the round to complete this cup cozy project.
You will also need to know how to properly change colors in a round.
Every stitch in the pattern is a single crochet stitch (sc). And each stitch is worked in the back loop only.
There will be 2 graphs that you can follow. Graph 1 is the full 2022 year. Graph 2 is the shortened version of 2022 which is (’22).
- Yarn: #4 Worsted Weight for main color, #4 Worsted Weight or a #3 DK Weight for the contrasting color for the year
- Hook: US Size (F/5) 3.75 mm crochet hook
- Other Tools: Yarn Needle, Scissors
Stitches/Abbreviations: US Terms
- ch – chain
- sl st – slip stitch
- st (s) – stitch(es)
- sc – single crochet
- blo – back loop only
- fsc – foundation single crochet
- The inactive yarn is carried throughout the cozy under the active yarn stitches.
- Do not pull the yarn too tight that is carried inside the stitches.
- Ch 1 does not count as a stitch.
- First single crochet of each round is always worked in the stitch you joined to.
- This pattern is worked in the back loop only.
Instructions: 2022 New Year Cup Cozy
To begin: In the main background color begin Row 1.
Round 1: Fsc 35, join to first st.
Ch 35, join to first ch, ch 1, sc in each around, join.
Continuing with Round 2, follow each numbered round of the graph and remember that each block represents a sc st and you are working in the back loop only. Always ch 1 to start a new round and work in the same stitch you joined to.
Fasten off and weave in ends after last round.
