Expressing patriotism through a crochet shawl
I had the idea of a red white and blue crochet shawl for 2 years before it finally came to life. My original idea was an asymmetric shawl. That idea did not turn out how I wanted it to so that was scraped and this new idea came a lot easier than the asymmetric idea did.
The idea of wavy red and white stripes was always going to be part of the shawl design. Just figuring out how the stripes should be incorporated along with the blue was more of a challenge.
This patriotic shawl uses blue in just the edging design. The edging of this shawl looks like a statement all itself. It is a ruffle edging that really brings back thoughts of a classic look and what may have been a style in the early days of the founding of the United States.

Stitches and techniques used
There is quite a variation of stitches used within this crochet shawl. This would be considered a crochet wave stitch shawl. All of the standard crochet stitches from chains and slip stitches to the treble crochet stitch are used. One special stitch is used which is the extended single crochet stitch. Single crochet decrease stitches are also used.
This patriotic shawl is worked from the top down. Each wave stripe consists of 4 rows that create it. Each wave gets shortened to create the tapered shape of the shawl.
Let’s explore the 2 sizes of the shawl. There is a Standard size and a Large size. The standard size has 13 stripes to be in keeping with the United States flag which has 13 stripes. The large size has 15 stripes and will have a slightly larger wingspan than the Standard size. If you think you want the 13 stripes but need a larger size I can only suggest using a worsted weight yarn rather than a DK weight and a size larger crochet hook than what is stated.

- Brackets [ ] indicate a set of instructions worked as many times as directed.
- When changing colors to start a new row, carry the unused color up one side of the shawl until needed next rather than fastening off each time. If a carried color is showing, make sure to work over it when creating Row 1 of the edging.

Don’t forget to carry up the unused color on one side of the work.

Row 6: Repeat Row 2. 111 (129) sts, 84 (98) ch-1 sps
Row 7: Repeat Row 3. 109 (127) sts, 84 (98) ch-1 sps
Row 8: Repeat Row 4. 191 (223) sc
Rows 9-52 (60): Repeat Rows 5-8, alternating A and B every 4 rows when the repeat starts again. Row 52 (60) st count is 15 sc.
Fasten off A. Continue to Edging.
EDGING
If a carried color is showing, make sure to work over it when creating Row 1 of the edging.
Row 1: Join C to the side of the first st of Row 1, begin to sc evenly along each row edge placing about 9-10 sc along each 4-row stripe section, place 1 sc in each st along the bottom last row then continue evenly along the other side edge placing about 9-10 sc along each 4-row stripe section, turn.
Row 2: Ch 2, dc in first, ch 1, *V-st in next, ch 1, dc in next, ch 1; repeat from * across, if the repeat ends on a V-st, dc in last instead of V-st, turn.
Row 3: Ch 2, dc in first, dc in ch sp, [ch 1, sk 1, (dc in next ch sp, ch 1, sk 1) 2 times, V-st in next ch sp] repeat across until no more repeats can fit, (ch 1, sk 1, dc in ch sp) in any remaining ch-1 sps, dc in last, turn.
Row 4: Ch 2, dc in first, ch 1, sk 1, *dc in next ch sp, ch 1, sk 1; repeat from * across to last st, dc in last.
Fasten off and weave in ends.
FINISHING
Wet block shawl and lay flat to dry.
