I hope this post finds you excited for Christmas! This paw print crochet Christmas ornament is bound to be a hit for any animal lover.

This is a fun and easy pattern that is perfect to give as gifts this year to all of your pet loving friends and family. Don’t forget to make a few for yourself as well. ๐Ÿ˜‰

There are many people who always want to include their pets when it comes to different celebrations. Christmas is definitely no exception.

This Paw Print Ornament can be one of the ways that you include and represent your pets this holiday season.

Work a crochet Christmas ornament up in a color that represents the color of your pets or work them up to go along with your Christmas color theme this year.

You can also create one in remembrance of any pets you may have lost and who will always have a fond place in your heart.

My Lovely Pets:

Before we get to the pattern let me introduce you to my lovely pets!

Chanel is the dog that my husband and I rescued from the local pound in October 2015.

Angel is our cat that we brought home from someone who didn’t want her staying on their property anymore. I am the cat person and my husband is the dog person.

Materials:

  • Weight #4: I made many using these yarns – I Love This Cotton, Premier Home Cotton, Lion Brand Heartland (a personal favorite)
  • US Hook Size G/4.0mm
  • Mod Podge or glue or whatever you decided to use if you stiffen your ornaments

Difficulty: Easy

Stitches/Abbreviations: US Terms

  • ch – chain
  • sc – single crochet
  • sl st – slip stitch
  • sk – skip
  • sp – space
  • hdc – half double crochet

Measurements:

  • Small – 2.75″ tall x 2.5″ wide
  • Large – 3.25″ tall x 3″ wide

Notes:

  • The circle is worked in the round and the toes are worked in rows
  • You can stiffen your project using your preferred method or the method I wrote within the pattern
  • You may need to keep pushing your stitches together within the ring to get them all to fit
  • Want to add a larger (non-wallet size) photo to your project? Adjust the size of the Large paw print by chaining more than the stated 15 chs (I recommend 18 chs or more), then add more hdc around the ring than what the pattern calls for. Continue with how the rest of the Large paw print pattern is written

Large:

Ch 15, join with a sl st to first ch.

Row 1: Ch 1, 35 hdc around ch ring, join with a sl st to first st, turn.

Row 2: Ch 1, sc in next st, ch 4, sc in next st, (sk a st, sc in next st, ch 5, sc in next st) 2 times sk a st, sc in next st, ch 4, sc in next st, turn.

Row 3: Ch 1, sl st in sc st, 5 sc in ch-4 sp, [sl st in next 2 sc, (2 sc, 2 hdc, 2 sc) in ch-5 sp] 2 times, sl st in next 2 sts, 5 sc in ch-4 sp, sl st in last sc and into round 1.  Fasten off.  Weave in ends.

*Note: If you want to be able to add a larger (non-wallet size) photo to your ornament but the circle is too small, see the notes section above about how to adjust the pattern for that. You can add your photo and glue a felt piece to the back.

Finishing:

Cut an 8inch strand of yarn for the tie.  Use a yarn needle to pull it through the back of a stitch at the center of the paw.  Tie a knot at the top and cut excess.

Stiffening: If you would like to stiffen your ornament this is the method I used.  Mix approximately equal amounts of warm water with Mod Podge or School Glue.  Place ornament into water glue mixture. Gently squeeze the mixture into the ornament.  Lay flat on towel and press out excess water.  Leave to dry.  If you want to add glitter to your ornament you will sprinkle some glitter on after you press out excess water and before you leave your ornament to dry. You can also add glitter by crocheting an ornament by holding a strand of yarn and a strand of metallic thread together.

I hope you enjoyed this crochet Christmas ornament.

I am absolutely struggling with reading this pattern. Iโ€™m not very good with reading them. Itโ€™s just not making sense to me and I canโ€™t visualize it. Any suggestions? Iโ€™m more of a visual learner so any help would be appreciated.

I love this pattern. I made a bunch of these last year for Christmas for the staff of the veterinarian office that takes care of my animals. I made them in a bunch of different colors. The staff loved them…
