This chunky unisex crochet beanie is perfect for the Winter Season. Cooler weather always ushers in what I like to call Beanie Season.
I love giving myself the challenge to create 2 crochet hat designs each season and here is one of them.
This is a chunky unisex crochet beanie pattern that uses the Spider Stitch. The Spider Stitch gives this chunky crochet hat a very fabulous look to it.
This basic beanie pattern is actually worked in rows rather than in the round. Using the spider stitch worked in rows for a beanie allows for a decent amount of stretch to occur.
If you find that you are having difficulty with the Spider Stitch, check out this post that gives some great tips and tricks when working this stitch.

Yarn Choice:
This pattern calls for a bulky weight #5 yarn. Specifically Lion Brand Color Made Easy (now discontinued) or even Lion Brand Woolspun. Find some weight #5 bulky yarns here.
If you crochet tight, then you will want to go up a hook size or 2. You can even change the weight of yarn used. A handful of testers for this beanie actually used a weight #6 super bulky yarn to achieve gauge.
You may also want to keep in mind when choosing a yarn how much stretch that specific yarn provides. The yarn used in the example was one that when worked up gave a lot of stretch to it.
This specific hat would be perfect to make and donate to Hat Not Hate.

Continue to finishing instructions.

Finishing
Use beginning tail and a yarn needle, whip stitch or mattress stitch the first and the last rows together skipping the chain spaces of the last row when doing this.
Finishing Round: Insert hook into working yarn from last Row, ch 1, sc2tog evenly around top of the row ends, join.
Fasten off leaving a long tail. Use the tail and yarn needle to weave in and out of the top stitches, pull tight and weave in all ends.
