A Simple & Easy Crochet Pocket Scarf Pattern

This simple and easy pocket scarf will soon become a favorite crochet scarf to make and wear.

Now back to the pattern. The stitches in this design give this scarf a very classic and elegant look.

The number one thing I absolutely love in crochet is texture through different stitch combinations. But, the second thing I absolutely love is a nice open stitch work and that is what this scarf has.

This scarf with pockets uses double crochet stitches and chains to create an open mesh pattern.

Yarn:

The yarn used in this pattern is Lion Brand ZZ Twist. I love this yarn for this project because it has such a great stretch to it as well as very nice stitch definition.

You can substitute another weight #4 worsted yarn but keep in mind that the stretch, feel and look of the scarf can be slightly different when using a substitute yarn.

How To Wear:

You can easily adjust the length of this scarf depending on how you would like to wear it. You can wear this wrapped around the neck once or not wrapped around the neck at all.

The pattern below will indicate where you can work even more of the repeats or work less of the repeats to adjust the scarf perfectly for how you want it.

This pocket scarf would pair very nicely with a long sleeve shirt in the cooler moths of the year.

More Details:

Another thing about this scarf that I like is the fact that it is worked all in one piece! There is no need to break the yarn to create the pockets. The pockets are formed and seamed when you add the border round to the scarf.

If you like pocket shawls but hate how much yarn they can take up or how long they can take to make then try out this pocket scarf. There can be a time and place for a pocket shawl as well as a time and place for a pocket scarf.

If there is any way I can get out of creating separate pieces for projects that need seamed or sewn on I will figure it out. And that is why I love this scarf so much. No sewing or seaming.

EASY POCKET SCARF:

Materials:

• Yarn: #4 Worsted Weight – 3 skeins Lion Brand ZZ Twist or 740 yards of a similar substitute
• Hook: US Size (I/9) 5.5 mm crochet hook or size needed to obtain gauge
• Other Tools: Yarn Needle, Scissors, Stitch Markers

• 11” x 83”

Gauge:

• 14 dc x 9 rows = 4”/10cm

Stitches/Abbreviations: US Terms

• ch – chain
• st(s) – stitch(es)
• sp – space
• sk – skip
• sl st – slip stitch
• hdc – half double crochet
• dc – double crochet
• dc2tog – double crochet 2 stitches together

Notes:

• This is worked in 1 piece in a long rectangle from one pocket to the other pocket.
• The pockets are sewn when working the final border around.
• Ch 3 counts as a dc st.

Instructions:

Ch 27.

Row 1: Dc in 3^rd ch from hook and in each across, turn – 25 sts.

Rows 2-26: Ch 2, dc in each across, turn – 25 sts.

Row 27: Ch 2, 2 dc in each across, turn – 50 sts.

Row 28: Ch 3, *dc in next 2, ch 2, sk 2; repeat from * across until 1 remains, dc in last, turn – 26 dc, 12 ch sps.

Row 29: Ch 3, *2 dc in ch 2 sp, ch 2, sk 2; repeat from * across until 1 remains, dc in last, turn – 26 dc, 12 ch sps.

Rows 30-132: Repeat Row 29. Continue more repeats if you think you will want more length to your scarf or do less repeats if you do not want the scarf to wrap around your neck.

Row 133: Ch 2, *dc in next ch sp, dc2tog; repeat from * across until 1 remains, dc in last – 25 sts.

Rows 134-159: Ch 2, dc in each across, turn – 25 sts.

Do not fasten off after last row.

Border & Pockets:

Lay the scarf flat so there are no twists in it. Count 13 rows up from each end of the scarf.  Fold the 13 Rows up on each end. Pin in place with stitch markers making sure you have 13 rows lined up on the back side of the pocket with the 13 rows on the front before working the Border round to seam the pockets.

Picking up the working yarn from the last Row worked, ch 1, evenly hdc around the entire scarf (2 hdc worked in each row end and 2-3 hdc in each corner). Around the pockets be sure to crochet into both layers of fabric.  Join with a sl st when finished with the border round.

Fasten off and weave in ends.
