Another October is finally here. I am excited to share this top down crochet beanie pattern with you!
This October is the 9th year for a crochet charity event called the Crochet Cancer Challenge. This event is hosted by Sweet Potato 3 and I created this hat just for this event.
This event runs through the entire month of October. Each day a new hat pattern will be available for 48 hours to be downloaded for free. This download is a pledge to make a minimum of 1 hat to donate from that pattern.
You must visit the main Crochet Cancer Challenge post each day in October to find the next hat pattern that is available. I hope you are able to participate and donate some hats this year to a cancer patient or cancer center.

Beanie Details:
I knew right away this year what type of beanie pattern I wanted to write for this challenge.
I wanted this pattern to be my very first top down crochet beanie pattern! After working some other hat patterns from other designers to donate the hats to Hat Not Hate I realized even more how much I love a top down beanie!
I had already used this stitch combination in my Eternal Dawn Advent Scarf & Cowl design but I needed to figure out how to use the same stitch combination but in a hat design. Specifically a top down beanie.
This beanie uses chain stitches, single crochet stitches, half double crochet stitches and a special stitch called the mini bean stitch. A stitch explanation for the mini bean stitch is below in the Stitches/Abbreviations section.
This top down beanie can also be made in 3 sizes. Those sizes are Child (20″ head circumference), Adult Regular (21-22″ head circumference) and Adult Large (23″ head circumference).
Why orange? I chose the color orange for this hat to bring awareness to Kidney Cancer for this challenge.
I hope you enjoy making this crochet hat!

My name is Janet, also, and I am excited to discover your website. I am a master crocheter and have been looking for a hat pattern for my signature look. You see, I was diagnosed with cancer in April 2022. I lost my hair in October 2022 and have been looking for a signature look that is unique for me. I have chosen to not wear a wig but definitely need to wear a hat as being bald, my head is always so cold. I am going to make one of your patterns and hope that it is the hat pattern I have been looking for. I figure I will be wearing a hat through summer.
Hi, Janet, love the looks of the pattern, but I came across the Cancer Challenge on Oct. 10, too late to get the download. I can find all of the info about the hat, but not the actual pattern on your website. How can I access the pattern?
Hello, Sorry you missed the timeframe for the download. I will be updating the post first thing tomorrow 10/11/2021. It will include all of the instructions to make the hat. You can always use the code GET1OFF in my Ravelry shop if you were interested in $1 off of a pattern pdf. But the full pattern will be available to view for free on my site tomorrow.
HOOKING TO FIGHT CANCER is the best
Very frustrating, I’m unable to load this on Ravelry. Doesn’t allow the code to be input 🙁
Hello, are you not seeing the ‘use a coupon code’ option near the ‘checkout now’ button? Once the pattern is added to your cart there should be an option to enter a coupon code unless Ravelry has had a small glitch. Have you cleared your browser history and/or tried another browser. The code will be active through tomorrow (10/8/21)as well if you try again but if for some reason you still have an issue please email me at [email protected]
Thank you for this pattern, I have an uncle battling aggressive kidney cancer right now…
Thank you for the pattern. I can’t wait to make a few to donate. I love the texture.
